In April 2011, a community statue of a Kodiak bear was relocated from the Kodiak Hotel to the Kodiak National Wildife Refuge Visitor Center and rededicated in a ceremony. This interpretive sign examines the role of Charles Madsen, hunting guide, and others in establishing the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. Many members of the Madsen family attended, including Roy Madsen, son of Charles Madsen. His photo appears on the interpretive sign, wearing white gloves and holding binoculars.
